JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 11. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 51 :

(Vた/Vなかった)+ものだ/もんだ

Explanation:

I remember I used to do V a lot.
To show a heart filled memory of the speaker.
Normally used to show the speaker’s deep feelings.

For example:

子供のときは、毎日遅く寝たものだ。
Kodomo no toki wa, mainichi osoku neta mono da.
When I was a kid, I used to go to bed late everyday. 

昔はよくこの本屋に行ったもんだ。
Mukashi wa yoku kono hon’ya ni itta monda.
I often went to this bookstore in the past.

Structure 52:

(Nの/Vる/Vた)+ついでに

Explanation:

By the way, en passant.

For example:

出かけるついでに、コンビニに寄って、牛乳を買ってきてくれない?
Dekakeru tsuide ni, konbini ni yotte, gyuunyuu wo katte kite kurenai?
Since you’re going out, will you stop by a convenience store and buy some milk for me?

散歩のついでに、友達の家へ行ってみた。
Sanpo no tsuide ni, tomodachi no ie e itte mita.
I went to my friend’s house while taking a walk.

Structure 53 :

(Nの/Vる/Vる。その)+たびに

Explanation:

Everytime ~/ whenever ~

For example:

この写真を見るたびに、小学生時代の友達を思い出す。
Kono shashin wo miru tabi ni, shougakusei jidai no tomodachi wo omoidasu.
Every time I look at this picture, it reminds me of my friends from elementary school.

彼は旅行のたびに、お土産を買ってきてくれる。
Kare wa ryokou no tabi ni, omiyage wo katte kite kureru.
Every time he travels, he buys me a souvenir.

Structure 54 :

Vた+とたん/とたんにVた。そのとたん~

Explanation:

Just when/ right at the moment when V then ~
Followed by a sudden change, not used for changes that are planned a head.

For example:

彼女を見たとたん、胸がドキドキした。
Kanojo wo mita totan, mune ga dokidoki shita.
The moment I saw her, my heart beat fast.

私は彼の話を聞いたとたんに笑い出した。
Watashi wa kare no hanashi wo kiita totan ni waraidashita.
I burst into laughter when I heard his story.

Structure 55 :

(Nの/Vている)+最中に/最中だ

Explanation:

Right at the moment, just as ~
Right in the middle of an action, something happens unexpectedly.

For example:

お風呂に入っている最中に電話が鳴った。
Ofuro ni haitte iru saichuu ni denwa ga natta.
The phone rang while I was taking a bath.

テレビを見ている最中に停電しました。
Terebi wo mite iru saichuu ni teiden shimashita.
The power went out while I was watching TV.
