The following are some common use of より and や.

Particle より

1. Express the place or time to start the action

昨日のパーティーは八時より始まった。
きのうのパーティーははちじよりはじまった。
kinou no pati ha hachiji yori hajimatta.

Yesterday’s party started from eight o’clock.

この電車はより先は各駅に止まります。
このでんしゃはかしわよりさきはかくえきにとまります。
kono densha wa, Kashiwa yori saki wa kaku eki ni tomarimasu.

This train will stop at every station after Kashiwa.

2. Used in comparison sentences

ナムさんはタンさんより背が高いです。
ナムさんはタンさんよりせがたかいです。
namusan ha tansan yori se ga takai desu.

Nam is taller than Tam..

隣の家はうちより大きい。
となりのいえはうちよりおおきいい。
Tonari no ie wa uchi yori ookii.

The house next door is bigger than our house.

3. Express the limited landmarks of the place

白線より前に出ないと。
しろせんよりまえにでないと。
shirosen yori mae ni denaito.

Do come out ahead of the white line.

4. Used to emphasize comparative ideas

お母さんは誰よりも子供さんを愛する。
おかあさんはだれよりもこどもさんをあいする。
okaasan ha dare yorimo kodomosan wo aisuru.

Mom loves children more than anyone else.

誰よりも金持ちになりたい。
だれよりもかねもちになりたい。
dare yori mo kanemochi ni naritai.

I want to become richer than anyone (else).

5. Used as a habit (mostly still express meaning comparison)

彼は賢明というより利口だ。
かれはけんめいというよりりこうだ。
kare ha kenmei toiuroyi rikou da.

He is more clever than intelligent.

マギーは花より美しい。
まっぎえははなよりうつくしいい。
Maggie wa hana yori utsukushii .

Maggie is more beautiful than the flowers.

Particle や

1. Used to make incomplete lists of things (usually nouns)

机の上に本やノートなどがある。
つくえのうえにほんやノートなどがある。
tsukue nó uể ni hơn ya noto nado ga aru.

There are books and notes on the desk

私の好きな食べ物はお菓子やパンやミカンなどです。
わたしのすきたべものはおかしやぱんやみかんなどです。
Watashi no suki na tabemono wa okashi ya pan ya mikan nado desu。

My favorite food are snacks, bread and tangerines.

2. Express light emotion or used when speaking alone (often used at the end of sentences)

まあ、いいや。
maa,iiya.

Yes, that’s fine.

まあ、ぼちぼちや。
maa,bochibochiya.

Well, things are slow.

3. Used according to the custom with the meaning (… just … then …)

その薬を飲むやいなや、急に眠気をおそってきた。
そのくすりをのむやいなや、きゅうにねむけをおそってきた。
sono kusuri wo nomu yainaya, kyuuni nemuke wo osottekita.

As soon as I took the medicine, I suddenly became sleepy.
