JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 4. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 16 :

Aくない/ A ( minus な) じゃない/ Vない/ Vられない + ことはない


It’s not that…
Usually used to negate the former idea.

For example:

Taberenai koto wa nai ga, amari suki janai.
It’s not that I can’t eat it, I just don’t like it.

Osake ya tabako o yameru no wa muzukashii ga, yamerarenai koto wa nai.
Giving up on smoking and drinking is hard, but not impossible.

Structure 17 :

Aくない/ A ( minus な) じゃない/ Vない/ Vられない + こともない


It’s not that…
This is a double negative.

For example:

Mainichi, kanji o yottsu ka itsutsu nara, oboerarenai koto mo nai.
Memorizing 4 or 5 kanji is not that impossible.

Kono kaisha o yameru hito no kimochi ga wakaranai koto mo nai.
It’s not that I don’t understand the feelings of those who left the company (I understand).

Structure 18 :



It’s impossible to not do V, annoyed if not doing V.

For example:

Taido no warui ten’in ni, hitokoto monku o iwanai de wa irarenakatta.
About staff who have bad attitudes, it’s impossible for me to not complain.

Kouji no oto ga urusakute, mimi o fusa ga nai de wa irarenai.
The noise from the construction site is really loud, it’s impossible for me to not cover my ears.

Structure 19 :

V  ( minus ない) →Vずにはいられない


Can’t stop / impossible to not. Similar to structure 18 but rarely used when speaking.

For example:

Shokuba de iyana koto ga aru to, sake o nomazu ni wa irarenai.
Everytime There is something bothers me at work, I can’t stop myself from drinking.

Ano eiga o mitara, daredemo kandou sezu ni wa irarenai darou.
When watching that movie, it might be impossible to not be touched for everyone.

Structure 20 :

Vない → Vねば+ ならない
しない → せねば+ ならない


Have to do something

For example:

Biza ga kireta node, kuni ni kaeraneba naranai.
Because my visa has expired, I have to return to my country.

Sore ga shinjitsu dearu koto o tashikameneba naranai.
I have to confirm if it’s true.
