JLPT N1 grammar structure 31 :
~ かたわら
Formation :
[名] の/ [動] 辞書形 + かたわら
Explanation :
Besides the main work, do another activity.
Examples and meanings :
1. 彼は教師の仕事をするかたわら小説を書いている。
Besides teaching, he writes novel as well.
2. わたしは会社勤務のかたわら子どもたちにサッカーを教えています。
Besides the main job at the company, I teach soccer for children.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 32:
~ ところを
Formation :
[普通形] (ナ形だー名だ + の) + ところを
Explanation :
“while, when, at… ”
This structure is used to express sorry or sadness when intruding or when something was going on (usually annoy others). This is a formal way of speaking.
Examples and meanings :
1. すぐにご報告しなければいけないところを遅くなってしまって申し訳ありません。
I’m so sorry for being late when I need to report.
2. お急ぎのところをすみません。ちょっと伺ってもよろしいでしょうか。
I’m sorry to annoy you when you’re in a hurry but can I ask you something?
JLPT N1 grammar structure 33:
~ ものを
Formation :
[動・形] 普通形 (ナ形だーな) + ものを
Explanation :
“wish… had…, but…”
This structure is used to express the real action happened different from the action that should have been done, the latter half is the result of the action, usually unexpected.
Examples and meanings :
1. 安静(あんせい)していれば治るものを、田中さんはすぐに働き始めて、また病気を悪化(あっか)させてしまった。 Had he rested he would’ve been better but Mr. Tanaka began working right after so his condition is worsened.
2. もっと慎重(しんちょう)にやれば誤解(ごかい)されないものを、彼の強引(ごういん)なやり方がいつも誤解を招く(まねく)
Had he worked more carefully he wouldn’t have been mistaken but his brute force way of working always cause misunderstandings.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 34:
~ とはいえ
Formation :
名・普通系 + とはいえ
Explanation :
“Although/though… but..”
Examples and meanings :
1. ダイエット中とはいえ、出されたごちそうに手をつけないなんて失礼だと思う。
Although I’m on a diet but it would be impolite to not at least have a bit of this feast.
2. まだ締め切りまで時間があるとはいえ、早めに完成させておいたほうがいい。
Although there is plenty of time from now to the deadline but it would still be better to have it done early.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 35:
~ といえども
Formation :
名・普通形 + といえども
Explanation :
“Whether.. or not, but … “.
This structure is mostly used in written form or formal occasion. Often used with adverbs like 「いかに/ たとえ/ どんな」
Examples and meanings :
1. 未成年者(みせいねんしゃ)といえども、公共の場で勝手なことをしてはならない。
Whether they’re minor or not, they still shouldn’t act on their wimps in public places.
2. いかに困難な状況にあったといえども、罪を犯(おか) したことは許されない。
However tough the situation might be, committing a crime is still unforgivable.
