JLPT N1 grammar lesson 5. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 21 :
~ をものともせず(に)
Formation :
[名] + をものともせず(に)
Explanation :
Regardless of/Even though/Even in.. (in tough situation).. (normally people in this situation would quit but the person here tries anyway)
Used to praise someone’s bravery and will. Not used to praise one’s self.
Examples and meanings :
1. 彼は体の障害(しょうがい)をものともせずに、精力的に活動している。
Regardless of his disability, he acted on his will.
2. 母は強かった。がんの宣告(せんこく)をものともせず、最後まで明るくふるまった。
My mother is very strong. She stayed positive till her last breath even though she knows she have terminal cancer.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 22 :
~ をよそに
Formation :
[名] + をよそに
Explanation :
Despite of/regardless of..
This structure is used to express the attitude of not caring about people or opinions around the speaker. Often used to express the surprising emotion of the speaker to the mentioned situation.
This structure is not used to talk in first person.
Examples and meanings :
1. 家族の心配をよそに、子供は退院したその日から友だちと遊びに出かけた。
Despite of the whole family’s concerns, my son hanged out with his friends on his first day being discharged from the hospital.
2. 住民たちの抗議(こうぎ)行動をよそに、ダムの建設(けんせつ)計画が進められている。
Despite of the residents’ protest, the dam project is still underway.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 23 :
~ ならいざしらず
Formation :
[名] + ならいざしらず
Explanation :
「AならいざしらずB」 means if it’s A then/it’s fine if it’s A but B is..
This structure is used to express the surprised or discontented emotion.
Examples and meanings :
1. 安いホテルならいざしらず、一流(いちりゅう)ホテルでこんなにサービスが悪いなんて許せない。
I mean, I can forgive if it’s a cheap hotel but for such first class hotel to have this kind of service is unbearable.
2. 祖父母(そふぼ)の代ならいざしらず、今の時代に「手ぬぐい」なんてあまり使わないよ。
I don’t really know about your era but in this era almost no one uses handkerchief.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 24 :
~ んばかりだ
Formation :
[動] ない + んばかりだ (*) する → せんばかりだ
Explanation :
Almost/almost like/like
Examples and meanings :
1. 彼は力強く(ちかりづよく)うなずいた。任せろと言わんばかりだった。
He nodded really hard. It’s almost like he’s saying “leave it to me”. =
2. 頭を畳(たたみ)につけんばかりにしてわびたのに、父は許してくれなかった。
Begged with head almost touched the map to apologize but my head still didn’t forgive.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 25 :
~ とばかり(に)
Formation :
Quote(s)(direct or indirect) + とばかり(に)
Explanation : almost like saying “..”
Examples and meanings :
1. ケーキを買って帰ったら、「待ってました」とばかり、みんながテーブルに集まった。
I’m back from buying breads, everyone already gathered at the table almost like they’re saying “We’re waiting”.
2. 子供はもう歩けないとばかりに、その場にしゃがみ込んでしまった。
My son sat at that spot like he’s saying “I can’t walk anymore”.
