JLPT N1 grammar lesson 1. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 1 :
が早(はや) いか
Formation :
[動]辞書形/ た形 + が早(はや) いか
Explanation :
“as soon as” .
To express an action happen recently or a very short time before or after speaking. This structure is used with verbs describing the action that takes place in the moment, followed by an action that happened unexpectedly. (the speaker’s thoughts and emotions are not conveyed in this structure)
Example and meaning :
1. 海外旅行に出発の日、山田さんは空港に着くが早いか、コンビにに駆(か)け込んだ。
On the day I go abroad, as soon as Yamada came to airport, he went in the convenient store.
2. うちの子はいつも学校から帰ってきて、かばんを放(ほう)り出すが早いか、遊びに行ってしまう。
About my son, he throws his bag to go elsewhere as soon as he got home.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 2 :
や/ や否や
Formation :
[動] 辞書形 +や/ や否や
Explanation :
To express an action happen recently or a very short time before or after speaking. This sentence is used with verbs describing the action that takes place in the moment, followed by the description of the incident, the action…, not the speaker’s views, or thoughts.D
Examples and meanings :
1. 私はその人の顔を一目(ひとめ)見るや、30年前に別れた恋人と気がついた。
The moment I caught a glimpse of that person’s face, I knew he was my ex that I broke up with 30 years ago.
2. 選挙戦(せんきょせん)が始まるや否や、あちこちからにぎやかな声が聞こえてきた。
As soon as the election began, numerous voices were heard from everywhere.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 3 :
~ なり
Formation :
[動] 辞書形 + なり
Explanation :
“as soon as, immediately”
To express an action happen very short time after another action which was also took place recently.. The action after is often unexpected. The subject of this structure is often in 3rd person. The source of action of the first and second action is the same. (same subject)
Examples and meanings :
1. 彼はコーヒーを一口(ひとくち)飲むなり、吐(は)き出してしまった。
He immediately threw up after taking a sip of the coffee.
2. 課長は部屋に入ってくるなり、大声でどなった。
The head of the office shouted as soon as he stepped foot in the room.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 4 :
~ そばから
Formation :
[動] 辞書形/ た形 + そばから
Explanation :
To express an opposing action that happen right after another action that also happened recently, and this process repeats. This structure often means negative.
Examples and meanings :
1 毎日返事を書くそばから次々(つぎつぎ)に新しいメールが来る。
Everyday, a new mail is immediately sent everytime I’ve just wrote a reply email
2. このテキストは漢字が多くて大変だ。調べたそばから新しい漢字が出てくる。
This document has too many kanji characters it’s so difficult. Every time I looked up the meaning of a word, there’s another word that I don’t know its meaning.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 5:
~ てからというもの(は)
Formation :
[動] て形 + からというもの(は)
Explanation :
“Ever since”
Ever since an event, there’s a change and the change(s) stay permanently. This structure is not used with recent changes. The latter event expresses the change.
Examples and meanings :
1. 娘が大学に入り家を出ていってからというもの、家の中が寂しくなった。
Ever since my daughter went to college away from home, it’s so lonely in the house.
2. 子供が生まれてからというものは、子供のおもちゃばかり見て歩いています。
Ever since my child was born, I look for kid’s toys everywhere I go.
