JLPT N1 grammar lesson 6. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 26 :
~ ともなく/ ともなしに
Formation 1:
[動] 辞書形 + ともなく/ ともなしに
Explanation :
Do something naturally, unconsciously, unintentionally. Often used with verbs indicating wills like 「見る/ 聞く/ 待つ v.v」. Verbs are usually repeated before and after「ともなく/ ともなしに」
Examples and meanings :
1. テレビを見るともなく見ていたら、友達がテレビに出ていてびっくりした。
I was just watching TV unconsciously when I saw my friend on the TV, which made me very surprised.
2. 朝起きて、何をするともなくしばらくぼんやりしていた。
I woke up in the morning and was blank for a while without doing anything.
Formation 2:
疑問詞+(助詞) + ともなく/ ともなしに
Explanation :
From somewhere/somewhere/someone.. unidentified
Examples and meanings :
1. どこからともなく、おいしそうなカレーのにおいがしてくる。
The delicious smell of curry was from somewhere.
2. だれともなく、熊だ(くまだ)さんのことをクマちゃんとあだ名(な)で呼び始めた。
Don’t know who started calling Kumada by the nickname Kuma-chan (bear dude).
JLPT N1 grammar structure 27 :
~ ながらに(して)
Formation :
「動」ます/ 「名」+ ながらに(して)
Explanation :
Since../while.. (the status stays the same)
Examples and meanings :
1. この子は生まれながらに優(すぐ)れた音感を持っていた。
Since he was born, this child has a special sense of music.
2. インターネットのおかげで、今は家にいながらにして世界中の人と交流できる。
Thanks to the Internet, I can now interact with people all over the world even when I’m staying at home.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 28 :
~ きらいがある
Formation :
[動] 辞書形・ない形/ [名] の + きらいがある
Explanation :
Has the tendency, habit of doing something (not good).
Examples and meanings :
1. 彼はどうも物事(ものごと)を悲観的(ひかんてき)に考えるきらいがある。
He has the tendency of thinking things pessimistically.
2. うちの部長は自分と違う考え方を認めようとしないきらいがある。
Our head of the office has a habit of not unwilling to accept other way of thinking beside his own.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 29 :
~ がてら
Formation :
[名] する/ [動] ます + がてら
Explanation :
While, by the way = ついでに
Examples and meanings :
1. 散歩がてら、ちょっとパンを買いに行ってきます。
While I go to stroll, I’ll get the breads then come home
2. 友達を駅まで送りがてらDVDを返してきた。
While sending my friend to the gas station, I returned the DVD as well.
JLPT N1 grammar structure 30 :
~ かたがた
Formation :
[名]する + かたがた
Explanation :
While doing something, do something else as well/do something with 2 purposes.
This structure is often used with verbs indicating movements.
Examples and meanings :
1. 部長のお宅へお礼かたがたごあいさつに行こうと思っています。
I plan to go to my boss’s house to thanks and to say hi as well.
2. ご報告かたがた一度伺いたいのですが・・・。
I want to visit you to report about the job as well.
