Formation :
Meaning and how to use :
Describe a habit or someone’s action that are repeated. It is often used with adverbs that describe habits or repetitions such as「必ず」、「いつも」、「毎年」、「よく」
Example:
1. 彼は話すといつもサッカーなどについて話します。
Kare ha hanasu toitsumo skka- nado nitsuite hanashimasu.
He always talks about soccer whenever he talks.
2. あの人は遊びに行くと必ず私の家に行きます。
Anohito ha asobi ni ikuto kanarazu watahsi no ie ni ikimasu.
That person definitely goes to my house whenever he goes out to play.
3. どれがいいかと聞かれるといつも「どちらでもいい」と答えます。
Dore ga ii ka to kikareruto itsumo “dochirademo ii” tokotaemasu.
I always answer “Either is fine.” whenever I am asked which one was better.
4. 母が買い物に行くとバーゲンで商品を買います。
Haha ga kaimoni ni ikuto ba-gen de shouhin wo kaimasu.
My mother buys goods at a bargain price whenever she goes shopping.
5. この祭りと言うと毎年同じ形式で行われる。
Kono matsuri toiuto mainen onaji keishiki de okonawareru.
This festival is held in the same format every year.
Note: Unlike the way of speaking that describes the meaning “general conditions” in section 1, this way of speaking describes a certain subject and at the end of the sentence, we can use た-form or dictionary form.
