Formation :

Meaning and how to use :

Express your memory, or attention to something related to the previous sentence. Often translated as “now that you mention it, which reminds me …”.

Example:

A:「外はちょっとうるさいね」
B:「そういえば、今日は盆お祭りですね」
A: “Soto ha chotto urusai ne”
B: “Souieba, kyou ha bon omatsuri desune”.
A: “Outside is a bit noisy”
B: “Speaking of which, today is the Bon Festival”

A:「今日大切な会議がありますよ」
B:「そいえば、私が会議のための資料を準備することになる。急がなくちゃ。」
A: “Kyou taisetsu na kaigi ga arimasu yo”.
B: “Souieba, watahsi ga kaigi no tame no shiryou wo junbi suru koto ni naru. Isoganakucha”.
A: “There is an important meeting today.”
B: “Now that you mention it, I have to prepare materials for the meeting. I have to hurry.”

社長は今から私がこの仕事の担当になるっていいました。そういえば、リーダーのチームのメンバーになります。
Shachou ha ime kara watahsi ga kono shugoto no tantou ni narutteiimashita, Souieba, ri-da- no chi-mu no menba- ni narimasu.
The director said that from now on he is in charge of this job. Speaking of which, I will be a member of the leader’s team.

そういえばそうだよ。
Souieba soudayo.
Come to think of it, that’s right.

A:「彼は昨日学校に行きませんでした」
B:「そういえば彼は私に風邪をひいちゃったってだよ」
A: “Kare ha kinou gakkou ni ikimasendeshita”.
B”Souieba kare ha watashi ni kaze wo hiichattattedayo”.
A: “He didn’t go to school yesterday”
B: “Now that you mention it, he told me he had a cold.”

Note: This is used in speaking after listening to someone, but sometimes is also used in the form of self-questioning.
