Translation for Reference :

Two women are talking about Tanaka. What are they surprised about?

Woman 1: Hey, do you know that Tanaka is still in his 30s?

Woman 2: For real? I thought that he is nearly 50.

Woman 1: I thought he must be more than 45, but he is still 38.

Woman 2: Hey, I’m surprised. Well, speaking of that, his children are still small.

Woman 1: Yes. The older child is fourth grade and the younger child is still first grade.

Woman 2: I thought that they were all grown ups.

Woman 1: Me too.

What are they surprised about?

Instruction to practice:

In order to understand and make this type of lesson effectively, you can apply the following steps:

1. Catch the topic and the question :

The situation taking place here is:

Two women are talking about Tanaka.

The question is:

What are they surprised about?

2. Note the main ideas:

In this form of listening, you need to pay attention to the words that describe the surprising feelings of two women. And you should also focus on key words instead of trying to hear all the sentences then missing important words.

After listening, we have some key words as follows:

30代 : 30s

50近い: nearly 50 years old

45は絶対に過ぎ: must be more than 45 years old

まだ38: be still 38 years old

びっくり: surprised

子供: children

3. Choosing the answer:

According to what we have noted, we can deduct:

We should focus on the previous clauses to find out why these two women are surprised.

First, they talked about Mr. Tanaka’s age. The woman 2 thought that Mr. Tanaka is nearly 50 years old (50近い) and the woman 1 said that he must be more than 45 years old (45は絶対に過ぎ). But his real age is only 38 years old (まだ38).

They were surprised because Mr. Tanaka’s real age is lower than the age that what they thought. Only answer 4 has the same meaning as this.

So we choose answer 4. 田中さんが見た感じよりずっと若いこと。
