JLPT N2 Grammar lesson 34. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N2 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

Structure 166:

A。ということは B


It means.
B is concluded from A.

For example:

Kyou wa 5-gatsu tsuitachi desu. To iu koto wa, shigoto wo yasumemasu.
Today is May 1st. It means I can take a day off from work.

“Watashi wa tesuto de 95-ten wo torimashita.”  “To iu koto wa, goukaku desu ne.”
“I got 95 points on the test.”  “It means you passed.”

Structure 167:

A。というのは B


It’s because…
The reason is…
Used to explain the situation further.

For example:

Shigoto wo yametan desu. To iu no wa, zangyou ga ooin desu.
I quit my job. It’s because it involves a lot of overtime.

Ashita wa karaoke ni ikenain desu. To iu no wa, youji ga arun desu.
I can’t go to karaoke tomorrow. It’s because I have other plans.

Structure 168:

A。したがって B


That’s why.
Formally, mainly used in writing.

For example:

Chanto benkyou wo shimasendeshita. Shitagatte, shiken de ii ten wo toremasen.
I didn’t study hard. That’s why I can’t get a good score in the exam.

Neko arerugii ga arimasu. Shitagatte, neko wo kau koto wa dekimasen.
I’m allergic to cats. That’s why I can’t keep a cat.

Structure 169:

A。ただし B


Used to add details, notes, exceptions to things have been mentioned before.

For example:

Ie de geemu wo shitemo ii desu. Tadashi, soto e asobi ni itte wa ikemasen.
You can play games at home. However, you must not go outside to play.

Kono peeji no subete no shitsumon ni kotaete kudasai. Tadashi, muzukashii shitsumon ni wa kotaenakutemo ii desu.
Please answer all the questions on this page. However, you don’t have to answer difficult questions.

Structure 170:

A。もっとも B


Used to clarify information declared before.

For example:

Kensa no zen’ya kara inshoku kinshi desu. Mottomo mizu wa nondemo kamaimasen.
Eating the night before the check-up is not allowed. However, drinking water is acceptable.

Zen’in ga kono paatii ni sanka shinakereba narimasen. Mottomo, youji ga aru kata wa sanka shinakutemo yoi desu.
Everyone has to attend this party. However, those who have other plans do not have to attend.
