~や~など

Meaning and how to use :

To list objects. This structure also contains the meaning “there are other similar things”. “etc.” “ya” is used to seperate similar noun, nado in japanese means : “and so on”, “etc”

For example

1. 教室の中で机や椅子や黒ボードなどあります。
Kyoushitsu no naka de tsukue ya isu ya kuro bōdo nado ari masu.
In the classroom, there are desk, table, blackboard etc.

2. かばんにノートや本やペンなど入れます。
kaban ni nōto ya hon ya pen nado ire masu.
I put things such as pens, notebooks, textbooks, etc. into the bag.

3. 本棚にアメリカやアジアやヨロッパなどの本があります。
hondana ni amerika ya ajia ya yoroppa nado no hon ga ari masu.
On the bookshelf there are books of America, Asia, Europe, ect.

4. 動物園ではいろいろな動物があります。熊やとらや象などあります。
doubutsu en de ha iroiro na doubutsu ga ari masu. Kuma ya tora ya zou nado ari masu.
There are many kinds of animal such as bear, tiger, elephant, ect.

5. 日本はいろいろな大きい都市があります。例えば、東京や北海道や大阪などです。
nippon ha iroiro na ookii toshi ga ari masu. Tatoeba, toukyou ya hokkaidou ya oosaka nado desu.
Japan has many big cities. Such as Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka, ect.

Beside the meaning of nado described above. We can use nado in Japanese with the following combination :

Vru nado to suru : Do V or other similar V

朝ごはんを食べるなどとして、もうあさが終わった
asagohan wo taberu nado to shite, mou asa ga owatta.
I had breakfast and so on, and the morning is over

nado to : such as…, like…

私のことが好きなどと言ったが、今、呼んでもぜんぜん答えない
watashi no koto ga suki nado to ittaga, ima, denwa wo kaketemo zenzen denai
He said many things such as “he like me”, but now, when i call him, he doesn’t answer.

nado… nai : not… any

あいつの顔など見たくない
aitsu no kao nado mitakunai
I don’t want to see his face any more
