Meaning and how to use :
Describe someone’s speculation of something. Depend on the context, this speaking does not describe speculation but vaguely express a judgement. It often combines with “たぶん” and “きっと”.
For example
1. 明日雪が降るだろう。
Ashita yuki ga furu daro u.
Appearantly it’ll rain tomorrow.
2. 今は12時過ぎたので、きっと愛ちゃんは寝ただろう。
ima ha ichi ni ji sugi ta node, kitto ai chan ha ne ta daro u.
It’s over 0 am now, so little Ai might be sleeping.
3. 今日は先生に態度が悪いので、たぶん先生がとても怒っただろうね。
kyou ha sensei ni taido ga warui node, tabun sensei ga totemo okotta daro u ne.
I expressed a bad attitude to teacher, so he must be really angry.
2. Describe confirmation in which the speaker implies he wants the listener’s approvement. This speaking is used in spoken language with the tone rising at “だろう”
For example
窓から厚いコートを着ている人が見えるので、外はとても寒いだろう。
mado kara atsui kōto o ki te iru hito ga mieru node, soto ha totemo samui daro u.
I saw a man wearing a coat. It’s so cold outside, isn’t it?
上海はにぎやかだろう。君が行ったことがあるよね。
shanhai ha nigiyaka daro u. Kimi ga okonatta koto ga aru yo ne.
Shanghai is really bustling, isn’t it? You have come to there.
この問題、難しいだろう。
kono mondai, muzukashii daro u.
This excercise is so diffcult, isn’t it?
Note: Formal form of “だろう” is “でしょう”.
Both men and women can use this structure in written form. But in verbal communication, only the men use this structure.
