Formation :

~だろうか
N/Aな+ではないだろうか
Aい/Vのる+ではないだろうか

Meaning and how to use :

1. Express worried feeling, suspicion about the chance something happens. In some cases, it’s used as an addition clause indicating our suspiscion (example 3) or asking the listener indirectly (example 2).

For example

今日のテストがよくできない。昨日はちゃんと復習しないだろうか。
Kyou no tesuto ga yoku deki nai. Kinou ha chanto fukushuu shi nai daro u ka.
I did not do the test so well today. I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t revise enough yesterday.

A:「ヤンさんが帰国する際にその中国語の小説を買ってくれただろうか。」
B:「たぶんしたよ」
A :「[?] yan san ga kikoku suru sai ni sono chuugokugo no shousetsu o katte kure ta daro u ka.’
B :「[?] tabun shi ta yo’
A: “I don’t know if Yan bought me that Chinese novel when he came back to hometown?”
B: “I guess he did”.

彼はカレーライスを作っているだろうか。カレーの香りがかすかしますね。
kare ha karēraisu o tsukutte iru daro u ka. Karē no kaori ga kasuka shi masu ne.
He may be cooking curry right now. I smell it slightly.

2. Describe the speculation of the chance something happens, the level of certainty is lower than “だろう”.
Usage:
N/Aな+ではないだろうか
Aい/Vのる+ではないだろうか

For example

今からちゃんと勉強しないと進学するのが難しくなるではないだろうか。
ima kara chanto benkyou shi nai to shingaku suru no ga muzukashiku naru de ha nai daro u ka.
Is it really hard to get higher education if we don’t study seriously from now?

僕の病気が早く医者に見てもらわないと治らなくなるではないだろうか。
boku no byouki ga hayaku isha ni mi te morawa nai to naora naku naru de ha nai daro u
My disease is unlikely to be cured if I don’t visit doctor soon.

長い時間人と話しないと将来は声をかけるだけでも恥ずかしいではないだろうか。
nagai jikan jin to hanashi shi nai to shourai ha koe o kakeru dake demo hazukashii de ha nai daro u ka.
You’re likely to be so shy to even say if you don’t talk to others for a long time.

Note: Some notes about how to use 2:
+) In cases where it’s unlikely to happen, use the stucture ”だろうか”.
+) In verbal communication, “ではないだろうか” will be “(ん)ではないだろうか”.
