This structure is used as the precursory to show that the mentioned event will be the context of the topic.
For example
田中さんを誘ったのですが、彼が来なかった。
tanaka san wo izanatu ta no desu ga kare ga ko nakatu ta
I had invited Tanaka, but he didn’t come.
先月東京に行ったのですが、偶然に長い時間に再会えない友達に会った。
sengetsu toukyou ni itu ta no desu ga guuzen ni nagai jikan ni sai ae nai tomodachi ni atu ta
Last month I went to Tokyo. I accidentally met the friend I didn’t see for a long time.
新しい携帯電話を買いたいのですが、どこがいいか教えてくれないか。
atarashii keitai denwa wo kai tai no desu ga doko ga ii ka oshie te kure nai ka
I want to buy a new mobile phone, can you suggest any good store?
