Meaning and how to use :
1. To forbid, not allow someone to do something. It’s usually used by the older, superiors like director, parents to staff, childen,…
Only used with: Vてはだめです
For example
まだ宿題を終わっていなかったら、遊びに行ってはだめですよ。
Mada shukudai o owatte i nakattara, asobi ni itte ha dame desu yo.
If you haven’t done your homework, you mustn’t go out.
それはとても怖い話ですよ。聞いたら、泣いてはだめです。
sore ha totemo kowai hanashi desu yo. Kii tara, nai te ha dame desu.
This is a scaring story. You mustn’t cry after you listen if you want to listen.
そんな態度をしてはだめです。
sonna taido o shi te ha dame desu.
Don’t show that attitude.
2. Express that some state or condition is not OK. This structure is often used in spoken language.
Formation
N/Aな+ではだめです
Aいー>Aくてはだめです
Vていてはだめです
Examples :
いい人になりたいと言っていますが、そんなに悪い行動ばかりしていてはだめです。
ii hito ni nari tai to itte i masu ga, sonnani warui koudou bakari shi te i te ha dame desu.
He says he want to become a good person. But many bad action like that is not acceptable.
歌手になりたいそうですが、今の声ではだめですね。
kashu ni nari tai sou desu ga, ima no koe de ha dame desu ne.
I want to become a singer, but my voice now is really bad.
外に出かけたいですが、こんなに寒くてはだめです。
soto ni dekake tai desu ga, konnani samuku te ha dame desu.
I want to go out, but being cold like this is not OK. (i can’t go as it is cold)

ではー>じゃ
