Meaning and how to use :
It is used to correct a part of content of a sentence or to negate what listeners can imagine from that content.
Example:
来年日本に留学します。もっとも短期留学しますが。
Rainen nihon ni ryuugakushimasu. Mottomo tanki ryuugaku shimasuga.
I will study abroad in Japan next year. However, it’s just short-term study abroad.
帰国するつもりです。もっとも時間がある場合だけど。
Kikoku suru tsumori desu. Mottomo jikan ga aru baai dakedo.
I’m going to return to my country. But only if I have time.
彼女に全部話すつもりです。もっともいいチャンスがあるけど。
Kanojo ni zenbu hanasu tsumori desu. Mottomo ii chansu ga aru kedo.
I’m going to tell her everything. But just when I have a good chance.
友達と映画に見に行くつもりです。もっとも都合がいいが。
Tomodachi to eiga ni mi ni iku tsumori desu. Mottomo tsugou ga ii ga.
I’m going to see movie with my friend. Just when it is convenient.
中国の歴史を調べるつもりです。もっともタイムがあるが。
Chuukoku no rekishi wo shiraberu tsumori desu. Motto mo taimu ga aruga.
I’m going to learn about Chinese history. But in case I have time.
Note:「けど」 is used in speaking.
