Aい（remove い）＋そうです
Aな＋そうです
Meaning and how to use :
Used to express predictions, thoughts of the speaker based on appearance, informations that can be seen or heard,.. of a situation, a thing.. Not used for obvious situations.
Examples:
1. 彼らが読んでいる絵本が面白そうですね。
Karera ga yon de iru ehon ga omoshiro sou desu ne.
The picture book they’re reading seems interesting.
2. この料理がおいしそうですね。一口食べてもいいですか。
Kono ryouri ga oishi sou desu ne. Hitokuchi tabe te mo ii desu ka.
This dish looks good. Can I have a bite?
3. 彼女が憂鬱そうです。何か悪いことを会ったばかりだろう。
Kanojo ga yuuutsu sou desu. Nani ka warui koto o atta bakari daro u.
She looks upset. Seems like she got into something bad.
4. ピカソの絵は一見抽象そうだが、実は簡単に理解されるよ。
Pikaso no e ha ikken chuushou sou da ga, jitsuha kantan ni rikai sareru yo.
Picasso’s paintings initially might look ambigous but it’s actually real simple.
5. 漢字はちょっと見たところとても難しそうだが、実は覚えやすいよ。
Kanji ha chotto mi ta tokoro totemo muzukashi sou da ga, jitsuha oboe yasui yo.
Kanji might looks difficult at first but it is actually very easy to remember.
Japanese そうです grammar soudesu
* When used before verbs then “そうです” is turned into “そうに”, when used before nouns it is “そうなN”
Examples:
彼は悲しそうに自分の話を述べました。
Kare ha kanashi sou ni jibun no hanashi o nobe mashi ta.
He told his story in a sad tone.
まずそうなケーキ。
Mazu sou na keki.
The cake looks bad.
Note:
+) The adjective いい is turned into よさそう , ない is turned into なさそう
+) There are cases where “いかにも”, “さも” are used to emphasize.
+) When used with words like “一見”, “ちょっと見たところ”, … or some special words else, the phrase means “In reality it’s not true/In reality it’s not like that”
+) In negative cases, adjectives are turned into “Aな／い＋そうではない”, and verbs to “そうにない”, “そうもない”, “そうにもない”. Verbs can’t be used under “Vそうではない”
