Express something that is unexpected: “unexpected”, “outrageous”.
Example:
こんなドレスも4万円?とんでもない値段だ。
Konna doresu mo 4 manen? Tondemonai nedan da.
Does such a dress cost 40,000 yen? It’s a ridiculous price.
彼はとんでもない答えを出した。
Kare ha tondemonai kotae wo dashita.
He gave an ridiculous answer.
私はあの子にとんでもない質問をされて、困りになった。
Watashi ha anoko ni tondemonai shitsumon wo sarete, komari ni natta.
I was in trouble because I was asked an unexpected question by that child.
とんでもないプレゼントをもらって、私はとても感動した。
Tondemonai purezento wo moratte, watashi ha totemo kandoushita.
I was so impressed when receiving an unexpected present.

Note: This strucutre is a way of judging something with a bad meaning that is softer than「とんだN」.
