Japanese として grammar toshite
N として
Meaning : As N/in the role of N…. Describe the point of view for things as N.
Example :
1. 高校先生として２０年間以上も働いています。
Koukou sensei toshite nijuu nenkan ijou mo hataraite imasu.
I have been working for over 20 years as a high school teacher.
2. 親として自分の子供の安全さは何よりも大切なことです。
Oya toshite jibun no kodomo no anzensa ha nani yorimo taisetsu na koto desu.
As a parent, your children’s safety is more important than anything else.
3. 興味として漫画を描いています。
Kyoumi toshite manga wo kaite imasu.
I draw manga as a hobby.
4. 国の財産としてこの建築は政府に守られます。
Kuni no zaisan toshite kono kenchiku ha seifu ni mamorare masu.
This architecture is protected by the government as a national asset.
5. 田中さんはプロな野球選手として活動しています。
Tanaka san ha puro na yakyuu senshu toshite katsudou shite imasu.
Mr. Tanaka is working as a professional baseball player.
6. 会社の代理として今回の大事な会議に出席します。
Kaisha no dari toshite konkai no daiji na kaigi ni shusseki shimasu.
I will attend this important meeting on behalf of the company.
7. もともと俳優の中村さんは今度のゲームショウで歌手として参加します。変ですね。
Motomoto haiyuu no nakamura san ha kondo no ge-mushou de kashu toshite sanka shimasu. Hen desu ne.
Mr. Nakamura is originally an actor, but he will participate as a singer at the next game show. That’s strange.
8. A「前田さまは今年の選挙に候補者としてさんかするようですよ。」
B「そうですか。ぜったいに応援するよ。」
A : “Maeda sama ha kotoshi no senkyo ni kouhousha toshite sanka suru you desu yo”.
B : “Sou desu ka. Zettai ni ouen suru yo.”
A : “It is said that Mr. Maeda will attend this year’s election as a candidate”.
B : “Really? I will definitely support him.”
9. 去年のコンテスト、私は作家として受験しましたが、なんの賞ももらえずに帰った。
Kyonen no kontesuto, watashi ha sakka toshite juken shimashita ga, nan no shou mo moraezuni kaetta.
I took the exam as a writer in the last year’s contest but I went home without any awards.
Variation of として (toshite)
としての (toshiteno)
Usage : N1 としての N2
Meaning : N2 as N1. This structure is used to modify N1 by N2.
Example :
1. 会長としての責任は私にとってとても大事なことです。
Kaichou toshite no sekinin ha watashi ni totte totemo daiji na koto desu.
The responsibility as a chairman is very important to me.
2. 有名な人としての発言に普通の人の発言より気をつけなければならないと思います。
Yuumei na hito toshite no hatsugen ni futsuu no hito no hatsugen yori ki wo tsukenakerebanaranai to omoimasu.
I think that as a celebrity, you have to be more careful with what you say than an ordinary person.
3. 今度オリンピックに参加する国の代表としての役割は私に任せてください。
Kondo orinpikku ni sanka suru kuni no daihyou toshite no yakuwari ha watashi ni makasete kudasai.
Please leave the part as the representative of country that will participate in this Olympic Games to me.
4. 国家元首としての思いは人民に対する考慮を込めると思われます。
Kokka genshu toshite no omoi ha jinmin ni taisuru kouryo wo komeru to omowaremasu.
It is thought that the thought of the head of state must have the consideration for the people.
5. 委員としての行動はちゃんと真面目だと思います。
Iin toshite no koudou ha chanto majime da to omoimasu.
I think the act as a committee member must be serious.
6. 研究者としての作文はもちろん大学生より意味が深いだろう。
Kenkyuusha tosihte no sakubun ha mochiron daigakusei yori imi ga fukai darou.
Of course, writing as a researcher is more meaningful than a university student.
Japanese として grammar toshite
としても (toshitemo)
Usage : N + としても
Meaning : Even if…. as N….
Example :
1. 社長としても、この問題の解決方を出せるわけではない。
Shachou toshite, kono mondai no kaiketsukata wo daseru wakedehanai.
Even as a president, I can not give a solution to this problem.
2. 私としてもこんなに迷惑なことをされるなんて認められない。
Watashi toshitemo konna ni meiwaku na koto wo ảyeru nante mitomerare nai.
Even if it’s me, I can’t accept being annoyed like this.
3. 大学の教授としてもそんな簡単な数学の問題を解けるわけではないよ。
Daigaku no kyouju toshite mo konna kantan na suugaku no mondai wo tokeru wake dehanai yo.
Even if it’s a university professor, it’s impossible to solve such a simple math question.
4. 彼女は書家としても活動しています。
Kanojo ha shoka toshite mo katsudou shite imasu.
She is also working as a calligrapher.
5. リンさんは歌手としても中国で有名です。
Rin san ha kashu toshite mo chuugoku de yuumei desu.
Ms. Rin is also famous in China as a singer.
Japanese として grammar toshite
としては (toshiteha)
1. としては : Nとしては
Meaning : In the point of view/In the position of N… The emphatic form of として by adding は. There are polite forms of this structure such as 「…としましては／いたしましては」
Example :
1. 会員としては、君の無理な意見を反対すると思います。
Kaiin toshite ha, kimi no muri na iken wo hantai suru to omoimasu.
I think I will oppose your unreasonable opinion as a member .
2. 俺としてはその方法しかできないんです。
Ore toshite ha sono houhou shika dekinain desu.
For me, I can only do that.
3. 教師としては学生の行為を正しく教えるのは当然なことではないでしょうか。
Kyoushi toshite ha gakusei no koui wo tadashiku oshieru noha touzen na koto dehanai deshou ka.
As a teacher, isn’t it natural to teach students behavior issues correctly?
4. 木村さんとしては直に話したほうがいいと思います。
Kimura san toshite ha choku ni hanashita hou ga ii to omoimasu.
I think Mr.Kimura should speak directly.
5. プロなクックとしてはこの料理の味がめっちゃまずいです。
Puro na kukku toshite ha kono ryouri no aji ga meccha mazui desu.
As a professional cook, the taste of this dish is really bad.
6. 女としてはこんなに迷惑をされるなんてセックハラという行動ですよ。
Onna toshite ha konna ni meiwaku wo sareru nante sekku hara toiu koudou desu yo.
As a woman, being annoyed like this is called sexual harassment.
2. としては : N + としては
Meaning : Describe the meaning of “Compare to the normal level or normal condition, N has other value or is in other state”. This meaning is completely different from the original meaning of として
Example :
1. あの人はベトナム人としては肌色が明るいですね。
Ano hito ha betonamu jin toshite ha hadairo ga akarui desune.
That person has bright skin color for a Vietnamese.
2. この数人は会場としては入れないでしょう。
Kono suujin ha kaijou toshite ha hairenai deshou.
With this number of people, maybe it is impossible to enter the hall.
3. ここの気温は冬としてはちょっと暑いですね。
Koko no kion ha fuyu toshite ha chotto atsui desu ne.
The temperature here is a bit hot for winter.
4. この本は小説としては短いです。
Kono hon ha shousetsu toshite ha mijikai desu.
This book is short for a novel.
