Meaning and how to use :
Describe the meaning “apt to do, tend to do”.
Example:
人間はとかく外見で人の性格を判断する傾向がある。
Ningen ha tokaku gaiken de hito no seikaku wo handan suru keikou ga aru.
Humans tend to judge a person’s personality by appearance.
あの人は言ったことでとかくするつもりのことを批判するがちだ。
Anohito ha itta koto de tokaku suru tsumori no koto ow hihan suru gachida.
He tends to criticize what others intend to do with what they say.
田中さんはとかく言っているのに途中でなんとなくやめるがちだ。
Tanaka san ha tokaku itteiru noni tochuu de nantonaku yameru gachida.
Mr. Tanaka tends to stop saying somehow in the middle.
とかく人の意見を聞きたくない傾向がある人が多いです。
Tokaku hito no iken wo kikitakunai keikou ga aru hito ga ooi desu.
There are many people who tend not to listen to other people’s opinions.
Note: This structure is often used to describe bad things. It is used in writing. We can use the form 「ともすれば」、「ややもすると」instead of「とかく」.
