Formation :

Meaning and how to use :

This structure is used to give conclusions after hearing what the previous speaker said. Following this structure are explanatory and theoretical conclusions regarding what the previous speaker said.

Examples:

A::「参加者はどっと出口に走っているよ。」
B:「そうすると、危なくなりますよ」
A: `Sankasha wa dotto deguchi ni hashitte iru yo.’
B: `Sousuruto, abunaku narimasu yo’
A: “Participants are rushing towards the exit door”
B: “If so, it’s dangerous.”

A:「あの人の言ったこととやったいることが違いますよ。」
B:「そうすると、今度の仕事は彼に任せないほうがいい」
A: `Ano hito no itta koto to yatta iru koto ga chigaimasu yo.’
B: `Sousuruto, kondo no shigoto wa kare ni makasenai hou ga ii’
A: “What he said is different from what he is doing.”
B: “If so, this time, don’t let him be in charge of the work.”

私は早く大学を卒業したいです。そうすると、早く仕事があって両親に返報できます。
Watashi wa hayaku daigaku wo sotsugyou shitaidesu. Sousuruto, hayaku shigoto ga atte ryoushin ni henpou dekimasu.
I want to graduate from college quickly. That way, I can quickly get a job and repay my parents.

A:「今度の仕事は山田さんが担任でしょう」
B:「そうすると、私たちは首になる恐れがありますよ」
A: `Kondo no shigoto wa Yamada-san ga tannindeshou’
B: `Sousuruto, watashitachiha kubi ni naru osore ga arimasu yo’
A: Mr. Yamada is in charge of the work this time.
B: If so, we are on the line of being fired.

君は早く成長して社会人になってください。そうすると私がうれしいよ。
Kimi wa hayaku seichou shite shakai hito ni natte kudasai. Sousuruto watashi ga ureshii yo.
Grow quickly and become a useful person. If so, I am very happy.

Note: This structure is used both in sopken and written language. It’s comparatively the same as「すると」.
