Describe thing that is shown before「ということ」 is a truth
For example
さっき会長はメールを送ってくれた。明日は大切な会議があるということだ。
Sakki kaichou ha mēru o okutte kure ta. Ashita ha taisetsu na kaigi ga aru toiu koto da.
The chairman just sent me an email. (the content of the mail is) I have an important meeting tomorrow.
手紙によると、故郷にいる母は重い病気をかけるということだ。
tegami ni yoru to, kokyou ni iru haha ha omoi byouki o kakeru toiu koto da.
According to what is written in the letter, my mother gets serious ill at home.
本によると、この地方はとても暑いということだ。
hon ni yoru to, kono chihou ha totemo atsui toiu koto da.
According to textbook, this region is very hot.
彼の会社は開いたばかりなので、忙しいということだ。
kare no kaisha ha hirai ta bakari na node, isogashii toiu koto da.
