Formation :

Nをする

Meaning and how to use :

1. Often followed with by a noun (most of the cases are Chinese and foreign nouns) to make a verb. Translated as “doing something”.

Examples:

午後、リーさんとサッカーをします。
Gogo, ri san to sakka o shi masu.
This afternoon, I’ll bee playing soccer with Lee.

明日母の代わりにショッピングします。
Ashita haha no kawari ni shoppingu shi masu.
I’ll be shopping for groceries instead of my mom tomorrow.

2. To describe the outside appearances – visions of something.

Examples:

君は青い顔をしていますよ。
Kimi ha aoi kao o shi te i masu yo.
Your face looks pale.

あの人は豪華な姿をしますね。
Ano hito ha gouka na sugata o shi masu ne.
That person has a gorgeous appearance.

3. To express the meaning “have a job..~/following the career..~”. Combied with nouns indicating jobs.

Examples:

父は医者をしている。
Chichi ha isha o shi te iru.
My father is a doctor.

5年前に、母は作家をしました。しかし、今母は失業しています。
Go nen mae ni, haha ha sakka o shi mashi ta. Shikashi, kon haha ha shitsugyou shi te i masu.
My mother was a writer 5 years ago. She’s currently unemployed now.

4. To express the meaning “wear/put on accessories, clothes..”. When used to describe statues, it is used in the form 「している」

Examples:

今日夫が私からもらったネクタイをします。
Kyou otto ga watashi kara moratta nekutai o shi masu.
Today, My husband is wearing the caravat that I gifted him.

ダイヤモンドから作られた指輪をしている人は首相の奥さまですよ。
Daiyamondo kara tsukurare ta yubiwa o shi te iru hito ha shushou no okusama desu yo.
The one wearing the diamond ring is the prime minister’s wife.

5. To express the meaning “use something for a purpose other than its original/main purpose”
How to combine: N1をN2にします

Examples:

数学のノートを文学のノートにします。
Suugaku no noto o bungaku no noto ni shi masu.
I’m using my math textbook as my literature textbook.

スカーフを黒板消しにします。
Sukafu o kokuban keshi ni shi masu.
I use my scarf as the board-eraser.
