Meaning and how to use :

“current job”. Usually goes with nouns indicating job.

For example

町はずれのある病院で医者をしている。
Machihazure no aru byouin de isha o shi te iru.
I’m working as a doctor at an outskirt hospital.

コンピューターの会社で会社員をしている。
konpyūtā no kaisha de kaisha in o shi te iru.
I’m working at a staff of a computer company.

あなたは何をしていますか。
anata ha nani o shi te i masu ka.
What do you do?

卒業した後、建築家をしています。夢ができた。
sotsugyou shi ta nochi, kenchiku ka o shi te i masu. Yume ga deki ta.
After graduating, I’m an architect. The dream has been realized.

僕は作家をしていた。この仕事はとてもつまらないのでやめました。
boku ha sakka o shi te i ta. Kono shigoto ha totemo tsumaranai node yame mashi ta.
I used to be an author. That job is so boring, so I left.

Note: With structure “Nをしていた” it means did something in a moment in the past.
