Formation :

Vます(romove ます)たいです

Meaning and how to use :

1.Describe the speaker’s desire, wish to so something. This form is like an adjective. When we want to stress on the object, we change the particle「を」into 「が」

For example

今、テレビを見たいです。
Ima, terebi o mi tai desu.
I want to watch TV now.

日本語を勉強したい。
nihongo o benkyou shi tai.
I want to learn Japanese.

日本の盆祭りに参加したいなあ。
nippon no bon matsuri ni sanka shi tai naa.
I want to take part in Japanese’s Bon festival.

2. Describe the speaker’s desire, wish. Usually used at the beginning of the sentence to give order politely.
Form: Vます(remove ます)たいんですが

For example

1. 大使館に行きたいんですが…道が分からないので、教えてくれませんか。
taishikan ni iki tai n desu ga? michi ga wakara nai node, oshie te kure mase n ka.
I want to go to embassy. I don’t know the way to there, do could you show me?

2. 先生の電話番号を教えてもらいたいんですが。
sensei no denwa bangou o oshie te morai tai n desu ga.
I wish you to give me our teacher’s phone number.

3. ちょっと聞きたいんですが。よろしいですか。
chotto kiki tai n desu ga. Yoroshii desu ka.
I have a question. Can I ask you?

Note:
1. Don’t use “たいです” for third-person. If we want to we have to use “たがる”, or prediction “らしい”, “ようです”,… or qoutation”と言っています”
2. However, we can also use this structure for third person as long as it’s not put at the end of the sentence .
