Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meaning “Only the latter clause can be true, it can’t be the former clause”. The two clauses are the opposite , to emphasize the truth in the former clause.

Examples:

1. 皆は反対こそあれ、賛成することはない。
Mina ha hantai koso are, sansei suru koto ha nai.
Everyone will only oppose and will not agree.

2. あの商品の価格が上がりこそすれ、下がることは決してない。
Ano shouhin no kakaku ga agari koso sure, sagaru koto ha kesshite nai.
The price of that product will only go up and definitely will not go down.

3. 親は自分の子供を愛いこそなれ、子供に憎むや無関心な親はいない。
Oya ha jibun no kodomo o ai i koso nare, kodomo ni nikumu ya mu kanshin na oya ha i nai.
Parents can only love their own children and there’s no parent who would hate and neglect their own children.

4. A国とB国の戦争は損失を残しこそすれ、利益を得ることはない。
Ei koku tobī koku no sensou ha sonshitsu o nokoshi koso sure, rieki o eru koto ha nai.
The war between country A and B can only lead to losses and not gain anything.

5. あの子は本当に威張りこそあれ、成績がよくて、いろいろな賞ももらった。
Ano ko ha hontouni ibari koso are, seiseki ga yoku te, iroiro na shou mo moratta.
Although that child is arrogant, he’s got good marks and won a lot of prizes.
