なんていう+N(だ)

Meaning and how to use :

1. To ask somebody’s, some object’s name. This is rough speaking of “なんという+N”

For example

昨日あなたに電話した人はなんていう名前ですか。
Kinou anata ni denwa shi ta hito ha nan teiu namae desu ka.
What is the name of the man calling you today?

今年日本へ一番多い金額を輸入する国はなんていう国ですか。
kotoshi nippon he ichiban ooi kingaku o yunyuu suru kuni ha nan teiu kuni desu ka.
Which is the countries which imports largest amount of good to Japan?

君はなんていう仕事をしているか。
kimi ha nan teiu shigoto o shi te iru ka.
What job are you doing?

2. Highly scared or surprised of something. This is rough speaking of “なんというNだ”

For example

家事もしないし、一日中にテレビを見たばかりなんて、なんていう怠け者だ。
kaji mo shi nai shi, ichi nichi chuu ni terebi o mi ta bakari nante, nan teiu namakemono da.
He doesn’t do household chores and watches TV all day, what a lazy person!
3さいなのに、漢字が書けるなんて、なんていう天才だ。
san sai na noni, kanji ga kakeru nante, nan teiu tensai da.
He knew how to write Kanji since he was 3 years old, great!

10円を借りたいのに、あの人はだめだと言いて、なんていうケチ坊だ。
ichi zero en o kari tai noni, ano hito ha dame da to ii te, nan teiu kechi bou da.
He refused to lend me just 10 yen, what a mean person!
