Usage 1
なんて
Meaning : Expresses the meaning “something is unknown”. This is rough speaking of「なんと」. Often goes with「言う」、「書く」
Example :
この言葉なんて発音ですか。
Kono kotoba nante hatsuon desu ka.
What is the pronunciation of this word?
A「君はなんて言っているの。大きく言ってよ。」
B「はい、はい、もう一度言います。」
A : “Kimi ha nante itteiru no. Ookiku itte yo.”
B : “Hai,hai, mouichido ii masu.”
A : “What are you saying? Say it louder.”
B : “Yes, yes, I will say it again.”
あの人の名前は何ていうかよく覚えていません。
Ano hito no namae ha nanteiu ka yoku oboete imasen.
I don’t remember what that person’s name is.
あの英語のタイトルは日本語でなんて翻訳すればいいかわからない。
Ano eigo no taitoru ha nihongo de nante honyaku sureba ii ka wakaranai.
I don’t know how to translate that English title into Japanese.
面接の時、面接人はなんて考えるかちょっと好奇心があります。
Mensetsu no toki, mensetsujin ha nante kangaeru ka chotto koukishin ga arimasu.

Usage 2
Nなんて（いう）
Meaning : Used to ask for the name of someone or something. This is rough speaking of「なんというN」
Example :
由紀ちゃんはなんていう学校に通っているの？
Yuki chan ha nante iu gakkou ni kayotte iru no?
What is the name of the school where Yuki is studying at?
前田さんは現在、何ていう駅の近くに住んでいると言われます。
Maeda san ha genzai, nanteiu eki no chikaku ni sundeiru to iwaremasu.
Mr. Maeda is said to live near a station.
A「さっき君を探す人は来ましたよ。何ていう人か覚えない。」
B「そうか。リーさんかなあ…」
A :”Sakki kimi wo sagasu hito ha kimashita yo. Nante iu hito ga oboenai.”
B : “Souka. Ri-san kanaa…”
A : “The person who was looking for you just came. I don’t remember his/her name.”
B : “Really? Maybe it’s Ms. Lee.”
この作品は何ていう藝人によって作られました。
Kono sakuhin ha nanteiu geijin ni yotte tsukuraremashita.
This work was created by an artist called Hayato.
A「今年君は何ていう大学に受かったんですか。」

Usage 3
なんて（いう）Nだ
Meaning : Express the surprise/respect of the speaker for something. This is rough speaking of「なんというNだ」
Example :
こんなにできるなんて、君ってなんて人だ。
Konna ni dekiru nante, kimitte nante hito da.
You are the person who can do this.
皆をそんなに感動させるなんて、何ていう映画だ。
Mina wo sonna ni kandou saseru nante, nanteiu eiga da.
Impressing everyone so much, what a good movie.
親まで騙すなんて、なんて言うことだよ。
Oya made damasu nante, nante iu koto da yo.
Tricking parents, this is a really bad thing.
毎日うろうろして寝たり食べたりするなんて、なんていう人生だ。
Mainichi urouro shite netari tabetari suru nante, nanteiu jinsei da.
Hanging out, sleeping and eating everyday, what a boring life.

Usage 4
なんてことない (nante koto nai)
Meaning : Expresses the meaning : “It is not a big deal”. This is rough speaking of「なんということはない」
Example :
こんな忙しさ、なんてことないさ。
Konna isogashi sa, nante koto nai sa.
Being busy like this is not a big deal.
一見なんてことない問題だが、やってみるとめっちゃ難しいよ。
Ikken nante kotonai mondai da ga, yatte miru to meccha muzukashii yo.
The question looks like easy to do at first glance, but it’s really difficult when trying to do it.
A「昨日、クラッシュにあうの？」
B「その程度の事故は私にとってなんてことないわ。」
A :”Kinou, kurasshu ni aru no?”
B : “Sono teido no jiko ha watashi ni totte nante koto nai wa.”
A : “Did you get into a traffic accident yesterday?”
B : “That kind of accident is nothing to me.”
このぐらいはなんてことない。
Kono gurai ha nante koto nai.
This is nothing.
Usage 5
なんて…んだろう… (nante…. ndarou)
「なんて…Nなんだろう」
「なんてAななんだろう」
「なんてAいんだろう」
Meaning : Expresses the surprise/exclamation about something. This is rough speaking of「なんと…のだろう」
Example :
彼の絵はなんとすばらしいんだろう。
Kare no e ha nanto subarashiin darou.
How wonderful his painting is.
石田さんのスピーチはなんとわかりやすいなんだろう。
Ishida san ha supi-chi ha nanto wakari yasui nan darou.
Mr. Ishida’s speech is very easy to understand, right?
こんなに高いところからプールに飛び込むのはなんとバカなんだろう。
Konna ni takai tokoro kara pu-ru ni tobi komu noha nanto baka nan darou.
How stupid it is to jump into the pool from such a high place.
A「君の提出したプランはなんと無理なんだろう。ぜひ皆に反対されるでしょ。」
B「そんなことないよ。もう一度よく読んでみてください。」
A : “Kimi no teishutsu shita puran ha nanto muri nan darou. Zehi mina ni hantai sareru desho.”
B : “Sonna koto nai yo. Mou ichido yoku yonde mite kudasai.”
A : “The plan you submitted is impossible. I’m sure everyone will be against it.”
B : “That’s not true. Please try to read it again.”
あの人はなんとユーモアな人なんだろう。よく皆を笑わせます。
Ano hito ha nanto yu-moa na hito nan darou. Yoku mina wo warawasemasu.
How humorous that person is. He often makes everyone laugh.
あの赤いドレスはなんとすてきなんだろう。
Ano akai doresu ha nanto suteki nan darou.
How nice that red dress is.
アラビ語はなんと難しい言語なんだろう。
Arabi go ha nanto muzukashii gengo nan darou.
Arabic is really a difficult language.

Usage 6
Nなんて
Meaning: Expresses the meaning “It’s crazy”. It describes undervaluation to something and is the rough way of speaking used in speaking.
Example :
お前なんてひどいやつだ。
Omae nante hidoi yatsu da.
You’re a terrible guy.
こんな冗談なんて、誰も笑われないでしょ。
Konna joudan nante, daremo waraware nai desho.
No one will laugh at such a joke.
あんなナンセンスな話なんて、子供さえ信じない。
Anna nansensu na hanashi nante, kodomo sae shinjinai.
Even children don’t believe that nonsense story.
あの子のことなんて、感心する人は一人もない。
Ano ko no koto nante, kanshin suru hito ha hitori mo nai.
No one is impressed with that child.
こんなに簡単なクイズなんて、一見すると答えがわかるじゃない。
Konna ni kantan na kuizu nante, ikken suru to kotae ga wakaru janai.
Such a simple quiz, we all know the answer at first glance, don’t we?
お酒をいっぱい飲むなんてで死なないだろ。
Osake wo ippai nomu nante de shinanai daro.
Drinking a lot of alcohol won’t kill you.

Usage 7
…なんて
Meaning : Expresses the meaning “someone said that/ thought that/…”. It describes undervaluation or surprise to something. This is rough speaking of「などと」
Example :
ここで自由に何のことでもするといいなんて考えているでしょう。
Koko de jiyuu ni nan no koto demo suru to ii nante kangaete iru deshou.
You’re thinking that you’re free to do anything here, right?
彼が私のことを助けないなんて言って困っている。
Kare ga watashi no koto wo tasukenai nante itte komatte iru.
I’m in trouble because he said he wouldn’t help me.
娘は突然留学したくないなんて言い出して何も説明しないのでとても心配します。
Musume ha totsuzen ryuugaku shitakunai nante ii dashite nani mo setsumei shinai node totemo shinpai shimasu.
My daughter suddenly said that she did not want to study abroad anymore and did not explain anything, so I am very worried.
彼女は世界中を旅行する計画をたてるなんて言ったのにお金をまだ貯めないので、俺のを借りてもいいなんて願って本当に困っている。
Kanojo ha sekaichuu wo ryokousuru keikaku wo tateru nante itta noni okane wo mada tamenai node, ore no wo karitemo ii nanre negatte hontou ni komatte iru.
She said that she was planning to travel around the world, but she still hadn’t saved money, so I’m really in trouble when she asked me if I could lend her money.
まだこのことを気になると思うなんてよくならない。
Mada kono koto wo ki ni naru to omou nante yoku naranai.

Usage 8
…なんて
「N／Aな（だ）なんて」
「A／Vなんて」
Meaning : The event before なんて is the object of judgment. It also describes undervaluation or surprise.
Note : This is the rough way of speaking used in speaking.
Example :
雷なんて怖い。
Kaminari nante kowai.
I am afraid of thunder.
子供まで騙すなんてひどいやつだ。
Kodomo made damasu nante hidoi yatsu da.
Tricking children, what a bad guy.
この絵は１００万円で売られるなんて本当にないことだ。
Kono e ha hyaku man en de urareru nante hontou ni nai koto da.
This picture is sold for 1 million yen, it is really impossible.
ミスも一つしないのに首になるなんて認められない。
Misu mo hitotsu shinai noni kubi ni naru nante mitome rarenai.
It’s unacceptable to get fired when I don’t make a mistake.
