A thing, a person replaces another thing, person. Means “instead of..”, “In return for…”

For example

Kotoshi no shougatsu ha itsumo no you ni kokyou ni kaeru kawari ni, ryoushin to ryokou shi tai.

furī no shigoto ha jiyuu na kankyou ga aru kawari ni, okane no koto ga itsumo shinpai da.
