Meaning and how to use :
Describe a person who does a work which is the duty of someone else. Means “On behalf of..”
For example
今日の会議田中部長が来られないので、部長に代わって私はスピーチを発表します。
Kyou no kaigi tanaka buchou ga korare nai node, buchou ni kawatte watashi ha supīchi o happyou shi masu.
Because our boss cannot come today, so on behalf of him, I say the speech.
父に代わって兄が明日の試合を参加します。
chichi ni kawatte ani ga ashita no shiai o sanka shi masu.
On behalf on my dad, my sister will join the tomorrow match
クラスの皆に代わってクラス長は先生にプレゼントする。
kurasu no mina ni kawatte kurasu chou ha sensei ni purezento suru.
On behalf of the class, monitor gives teacher a gift
僕が熱があるので、僕に代わって妹は家事をします。
boku ga netsu ga aru node, boku ni kawatte imouto ha kaji o shi masu.
I was ill, so my daughter did my work
社長に代わって客を迎えます。
shachou ni kawatte kyaku o mukae masu.
I greet the customer for my boss.
Note: The form modifying for nouns of it is「にかわる」
In formal written papers, or solemn cases we use 「にかわり」
