Meaning and how to use :

Describes the meanings “it’s natural to do V, it’s right to do V”. This structure is used in ancient literature. Nowadays, it only appears in customary speaking expressing command/order.

For example

1. 若者はお年寄りを尊敬するべし。
wakamono ha o toshiyori wo sonkei suru beshi
The young generation need to respect the old.

2. この問題に対して慎重に考えるべし。
kono mondai nitaishite shinchou ni kangaeru beshi
It’s neccessary to think carefully about this problem.

3. 先生と話すとき、敬語を作るべし。
sensei to hanasu toki keigo wo tsukuru beshi
When talking to teacher, we need to use honorific.

4. 食べるまえに、「いただきます」と言うべし。
taberu ma e ni itadaki masu to iu beshi
Before eating, we have to say “Itadakimasu”.

5. この試合に参加すると、体調を確かめるべし。
kono shiai ni sanka suru to taichou wo tashikameru beshi
Whenever you enter a match you need to check your health status.
