Meaning and how to use :
Expressing the speculation of what happened in the past. The level of trust of speakers is lower than the structure「…た(だ)ろう)」 . It has the same meaning with「…た(だ)ろう)」 . Often used with the form「…たのではなかったか」 .
Examples:
昔の人は地球が丸だと考えもしなかったのではなかったか。
Mukashi no hito wa chikyuu ga maruda to kangae mo shinakatta node wa nakatta ka.
The ancient people probably did not think that the Earth was round.
そのところはにぎやかなではなかったか。
Sono tokoro wa nigiyakanade wa nakatta ka.
This place was probably very lively.
昔この地方は発展する農業で有名ではなかったか。
Mukashi kono chihou wa hatten suru nougyou de yuumeide wa nakatta ka.
This place was probably famous for having a very developed agriculture a long time ago.
あの時佐藤さんはすぐに決めず、ちょっと迷ったではなかったか。
Ano toki Satou-san wa sugu ni kimezu, chotto mayottade wa nakatta ka.
At that time, Sato probably didn’t make a decision right away but thinking for a while.
彼は日本に行ったことがあるではなかったか。
Kare wa Nihon ni itta koto ga arude wa nakatta ka.
He might have been to Japan before.
Note:「ではなかっただろうか」and「ではなかったろうか」 almost have the same meaning as this phrase.
