Expressing the meaning “after an action is done, another action will take place”.
Examples
1. 田中さんが出かけたとき、私からの電話がかかった。
Tanaka san ga dekaketa toki, watashi kara no denwa ga kakatta.
When Mr. Tanaka went out, a call from me came.
2. 彼女に会ったとき、「久しぶり」といいました。
Kanojo ni atta toki,`hisashiburi’ to iimashita.
When I saw her, I said “I have not seen you for a long time”.
3. 電車を降りたとき、中学の友達にびったりと会った。
Densha wo orita toki, chuugaku no tomodachi ni bittari to atta.
When I got off the train, I casually met with my junior high school friends.
4. 日本にいったとき、日本語を勉強します。
Nihon ni itta toki, nihongo wo benkyou shimasu.
When I went to Japan, I studied Japanese.
5. あの学者と話したとき、自分の勉強方法が間違ったところが多いときをつけました。
Ano gakusha to hanashita toki, jibun no benkyou houhou ga machigatta tokoro ga ooi toki wo tsukemashita.
After talking to the scholar, I realized that my studying method had many faults.
