N1(か)あるいはN2

Meaning and how to use :

Describing the meaning ‘either … or …”. It means that N1 is fine, but N2 is also fine. Please choose 1 in 2 ”. In addition, it means “Only N1 or N2 can be okay”.

Examples

証明書あるいは学生書を持ってください。
Shoumeisho aruiwa gakuseisho wo motte kudasai.
Please bring your ID card or student ID.

野村先生あるいはただし先生に連絡してください。
Nomura sensei aruiwa tadashi sensei ni renraku shite kudasai.
Please contact Nomura Sensei or Tadashi Sensei.

土曜日あるいは木曜日にここにもう一度来てください。
Doyoubi aruiwa mokuyoubi ni koko ni mouichido kite kudasai.
Come here again on Saturday or Thursday.

これあるいはそれを選んでください。
Kore aruiwa sore wo erande kudasai.
Please choose this or that.

歴史あるいは地理のテーマを一つ選んで皆の前になぜそのテーマを選んだか説明してください。
Rekishi aruiwa chiri no teima o hitotsu erande mina no mae ni naze sono teima wo eranda ka setsumei shite kudasai.
Please choose one between a historical or geographic topic and explain why you chose it in front of everyone.

Note: This is an expression used in writing or formal speech. Like it, there are many other types of sentences such as「N1かN2」、「N1またはN2」、「N1もしくはN2」. In informal speaking, using「N1かN2」
