JLPT N3 Grammar lesson 13. Hi everyone! In this article, Learn Japanese daily will introduce you to the JLPT N3 Grammar.

Let’s take a look at the next 5 structures.

Structure 61 :

(Vて/Vないで)+ほしい/もらいたい

Explanation:

To ask someone to do V/ not to do V for you.

For example:

あのう、教科書を見せてほしいんですが、…
Uhm…I want to (please let me) see the text book…

あなたに教えてもらいたいことがあります。
I have a problem and I need your help, (please).

Structure 62 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+ふりする注意:Aだな、Nだの

Explanation:

To act like ~/ pretend to ~

For example:

彼はそのことについて知っていることをしているが、本当は知らないと思う。
He acts like he knows it but in fact, he doesn’t.

田中さんは独身のふりをしているが、結婚していて3人も子供がいる。
Tanaka acts like he’s single but in fact, he’s married and has 3 kids.

Structure 63 :

Nに+とって/とっては/とっても

Explanation:

For N, to N ~
If considering N’s point of view, ~. N is normally used to address a person, an organization (In some cases, N can also be a thing)

For example:

あなたにとって、一番大切ものは何ですか。
To you, what is the most important thing?

あのあたりの人々にとっては、車は必需品です。
To people in that residence, cars are a necessity.

Structure 64 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+わりに/わりにはNだの、Aだな

Explanation:

(If) compared to A, it’s pretty ~
If compared to a common standard, it’s ~. Used when a thing, situation doesn’t match the standard (both positively and negatively).
Used in casual cases, in formal cases, you can use 比べて

For example:

年の割りには、若く見える。
To look younger compared to the age.

お金がない(と言っている)割りに、よく買い物をするね。
Saying not having money, but buying a lot.

Structure 65 :

(V/N/Aい/Aな)普+くせに
Note:Nだの、Aだな

Explanation:

~ yet (however) ~
Only used when the two clauses a the sentence have a same subject, if they are different, use のに

For example:

知っているくせに、教えてくれない。
You know it, how come you didn’t tell me.

元気なくせに、病気のふりをしている
Healthy, yet pretend to be sick.
