3. Grammar

Humble expressions

Meaning : the way of speaking that the speaker humbles himself to talk about his acts. Through that express respect to other people.

Usage : The object the speaker expresses his respect to is a superior.

お V-ます (remove ます) します

Usage : Verbs that are used in this pattern are Group I and Group II verbs. However, verbs that consist of one mora before [ます] (for example: みます or います) are not used in this pattern.

Example :

これから私の問題についてお話します。
Korekara watashi no mondai ni tsuite ohanashi shimasu.
Now, I’m going to tell you about my problem.

ご + Group III verbs

Example :

きょうの予定をご説明します。
Kyou no yotei o gosetsumei shimasu.
I’m going to explain today’s plan.

Special humble verbs:

いる → おる
言う → もうす
たべる/飲む → いただく
する → いたす
行く/来る → まいる
見る → はいけんする

Example :

ベトナムからまいりました。
Betonamu kara mairimashita.
I come from Vietnam.

お菓子をいただきたいです。
Okashi o itadakitaidesu.
I want to eat candy.

研究所の中におります。
Kenkyuujo no naka ni orimasu.
I’m in lab.

Polite expressions

Meaning : polite way of speaking of the speaker to express respect to the listener.

ございます is polite form of あります
でございます is polite form of です
よろしいでしょうか is polite form of いいですか

Example :

電話は階段の横にございます。
Denwa wa kaidan no yoko ni gozaimasu.
The phone is next to the stair.

学生でございます。
Gakusei degozaimasu.
I’m a student.

お飲み物は何がよろしいでしょうか。
Onomimono wa nani ga yoroshii deshouka.
Which kind of beverage do you want?

4. Kaiwa

心から 感謝いたします

司会者:優勝 おめでとう ございます。すばらしい スピーチでした。
Shikaisha: Yuushou omedetou gozaimasu. Subarashii supiichi deshita.

ミラー:ありがとう ございます。
Miraa: Arigatou gozaimasu.

司会者:緊張なさいましたか。
Shikaisha: Kinchou nasaimashitaka.

ミラー:はい、とても 緊張いたしました。
Miraa: Hai, totemo kinchou itashimashita.

司会者:テレビで 放送される ことは ご存じでしたか。
Shikaisha: Terebi de housou sareru koto wa gozonjideshitaka.

ミラー:はい。ビデオに 撮って、アメリカの 両親にも 見せたいと 思って おります。
Miraa: Hai. Bideo ni totte, Amerika no ryoushin ni mo misetai to omotte orimasu.

司会者:賞金は 何に お使いに なりますか。
Shikaisha: Shoukin wa nanni otsukai ni narimasuka.

ミラー:そうですね。わたしは 動物が 好きで、子どもの ときから アフリカへ 行くのが 夢でした。
Miraa: Soudesu ne. Watashi wa doubutsu ga sukide, kodomo no toki kara Afurika e iku no ga yume deshita.

司会者:じゃ、アフリカへ 行かれますか。
Shikaisha: Ja, Afurika e ikaremasuka.

ミラー:はい。アフリカの 自然の 中で きりんや 像を 見たいと 思います。
Miraa: Hai. Afurika no shizen no naka de kirin ya zou o mitai to omoimasu.

司会者:子どもの ころの 夢が かなうんですね。
Shikaisha: Kodomo no koro no yume ga kanaun desu ne.

ミラー:はい。あのう、最後に ひとこと よろしいでしょうか。
Miraa: Hai. Anou, saigo ni hitokoto yoroshii deshouka.

司会者:どうぞ。
Shikaisha: Douzo.

ミラー:この スピーチ大会に 出る ために、いろいろ ご協力 くださった 皆様に 心から 感謝いたします。
Miraa: Kono supiichi taikai ni deru tame ni, iroiro go kyouryoku kudasatta minasama ni kokorokara kansha itashimasu.

Translation :

I am sincerely grateful to you

Master of Ceremonies: Congratulations on winning the championship. It was a wonderful speech.

Miller: Thank you very much.

Master of Ceremonies: Did you feel tense?

Miller: Yes, I felt very tense.

Master of Ceremonies: Did you know that this would be broadcast on TV?

Miller: Yes. I want to video it and let my parents in America see it.

Master of Ceremonies: What will you spend the prize money on?

Miller: Let me see. I like animals, and I’ve had a dream of going to Africa since my childhood.

Master of Ceremonies: Then you’ll go to Africa?

Miller: Yes. I think I would like to see giraffes and elephants in the wild.

Master of Ceremonies: It means the dream you have had since childhood will come true.

Miller: Yes. Er, may I say something?

Master of Ceremonies: Please.

Miller: I would like to express my sincerest thanks to all the people for their cooperation and help so that I could participate in this speech contest.
