3. Grammar
Honorific language
Meaning : showing respect for the person you are speaking to.
Usage : Use with superior or first meet people.
Respectful verbs (verbs in passive form)
Example :
社長はもうこられましたか。
Shachou wa mou koraremashitaka.
Has the director come yet?
先生、何を読まれていますか。
Sensei, nani o yomarete imasuka.
Teacher, what are you reading?
お V (remove ます) になります
Usage : Verbs that consist of one letter before [ます] (for example: みます, ねます, etc.) and Group III verbs are not used in this pattern.
Example :
先生、何時にお帰りになりますか。
Sensei, nanji ni o kaeri ni narimasuka.
Teacher, what time will you go back?
Special honorific structures
行く/来る/ いる → いらっしゃる
食べる → 召し上がる
言う → おっしゃる
見る → ごらんになる
する → なさる
Example :
先生は教室にいらっしゃいます。
Sensei wa kyoushitsu ni irasshaimasu.
Teacher is in the classroom now.
先生お菓子を召し上がったことがありますか。
Sensei okashi o meshiagatta koto ga arimasuka.
Teacher, have you ever eaten candy?
お V (remove ます) ください
Usage : used to instruct or invite someone to do something in a respectful way.
Example :
お待ちください。
Omachi kudasai.
Please wait…
∼まして
Usage : in order to express politeness, sometimes verbs in て-form can become まして (Example : 出して→出しまして).
Example :
どういたしまして。
Douitashimashite.
You are welcome!
4. Kaiwa
よろしく お伝え ください
先生：はい、ひまわり小学校です。
Sensei: Hai, himawari shougakkou desu.
クララ：おはよう ございます。5年2組の ハンス・シュミットの 母ですが、伊藤先生は いらっしゃいますか。
Kurara: Ohayou gozaimasu. 5-nen 2-kumi no Hansu Shumitto no haha desuga, Itou sensei wa irasshaimasuka.
先生：まだなんですが・・・。
Sensei: Madanan desuga…
クララ：では、伊藤先生に 伝えて いただきたいんですが・・・。
Kurara: Dewa, Itou sensei ni tsutaete itadakitain desuga…
先生：はい、何でしょうか。
Sensei: Hai, nandeshouka.
クララ：実は ハンスが ゆうべ 熱を 出しまして、けさも まだ 下がらないんです。
Kurara: Jitsu wa Hansu ga yuube netsu o dashimashite, kesa mo mada sagaranain desu.
先生：それは いけませんね。
Sensei: Sore wa ikemasen ne.
クララ：それで きょうは 学校を 休ませますので、先生に よろしく お伝え ください。
Kurara: Sorede kyou wa gakkou o yasumasemasu node, sensei ni yoroshiku otsutae kudasai.
先生：わかりました。どうぞ お大事に。
Sensei: Wakarimashita. Douzo odaijini.
クララ：失礼いたします。
Kurara: Shitsurei itashimasu.
Translation :
Would you please convey my message?
Teacher: Hello, this is Himawari elementary school.
Klara: Good morning. This is Mrs. Schmidt speaking. I’m the mother of Hans Schmidt, a pupil in Class Two of the fifth grade. May I speak to Ms. Ito?
Teacher: She’s not here yet….
Klara: Then, would you please pass a message to her?
Teacher: Yes, certainly. What is it?
Klara: Hans ran a fever last night and he still has it this morning.
Teacher: Oh, that’s bad.
Klara: So, I’m making him stay at home today. Could you tell that to Ms. Ito, please?
Teacher: I see. I hope he gets better soon.
Klara: Thank you. Good bye.
