Meaning and how to use :
1. Expresses the meaning “Next to/Besides…”. This structure is mostly used in writings, and to narrate something.
Examples:
僕たちの傍らで、2歳の子供が嬉しそうに遊んでいる。
Boku tachi no katawara de, ni sai no kodomo ga ureshi sou ni ason de iru.
Next to us is a two year old boy is having fun playing.
暇な高橋さんの傍らで、忙しい私が仕事をしている。
Hima na takahashi san no katawara de, isogashii watashi ga shigoto o shi te iru.
Next to Mr. Takahashi who is having nothing to do, I’m busy working.
びっくりして、事情が分からない山田さんの傍ら、前に知っている中野さんが笑っている。
Bikkuri shi te, jijou ga wakara nai yamada san no katawara, mae ni shitte iru nakano san ga waratte iru.
Next to Mr. Yamada who is feeling both surprised and amazed, Mr. Nakano who has known it before is laughing.
2. Expresses the meaning “Besides the main job, do another job or do another shift.” Often translated as: “Besides.. I also..”.
Examples:
彼は本を訳す傍ら、本も書くことがある。
Kare ha hon o yakusu katawara, hon mo kaku koto ga aru.
Besides translating books, he sometimes write books as well.
あの人は俳優として活躍する傍ら、歌手として活躍している。
Ano hito ha haiyuu toshite katsuyaku suru katawara, kashu toshite katsuyaku shi te iru.
Besides being a actor, that person also is a singer.
私は大学に通う傍ら、アルバイトもしている。
Watashi ha daigaku ni kayou katawara, arubaito mo shi te iru.
Besides studying at college, I also work part-time.
