Meaning and how to use :

1. Expresses the meaning “A part of/ unknown part/ unknown” of time, a place, location,.. (depends on the question word). if particles are used, it’s often followed by question word.
How to use Question word + (particle)+ともなく

Examples:

どこからともなく、黒い猫が飛び出した。
Doko kara tomo naku, kuroi neko ga tobidashi ta.
Out of nowhere, a black cat popped.

だれともなく叫んで、やがて会場でいるみなは叫びだしました。
Dare to mo naku saken de, yagate kaijou de iru mina ha sakebidashi mashi ta.
Out of nowhere, a guy shouted and then followed by are everybody in the hall.

彼らはいつともなく私の後ろに立っていました。
Karera ha i tsu to mo naku watashi no ushiro ni tatte i mashi ta.
They stood behind me for a while but I didn’t notice.

2. Expreses the meaning: “Not really/ no intention or motive to do something” or “unintentionally”. Used with verbs indicating conscious actions.
How to use: Vる+ともなく/ともなしに

Examples:

会議中、聞くともなく細かくて大切ではない情報聞いた。
Kaigi chuu, kiku tomo naku komakaku te taisetsu de ha nai jouhou kii ta.
In the metting, I unintentionally heard informations that aren’t important.

あの人は「うん、うん」と誰かに言うともなしに言った。
Ano hito ha ‘un, un’ to dare ka ni iu tomo nashi ni itta.
That person said “Yes, yes” unconsciously.

今日僕はどこかに行くともなく遠くにドライブに行きました。
Kyou boku ha doko ka ni iku tomo naku tooku ni doraibu ni iki mashi ta.
Today, I drive my car unconsciously.
