Meaning and how to use :
Expresses the meaning “in vain, no bright future, pointless..”. Expresses disappointment, wanting to give up.
Examples:
どんなに高いテレビでも壊せばそれまでだ。
Donnani takai terebi de mo kowase ba sore made da.
No matter how expensive the Tivi is, it will be broken eventually.
大きい夢があっても病気にかかって死ねばそれまでだ。
Ookii yume ga atte mo byouki ni kakatte shine ba sore made da.
Even your big dreams will still be pointless if you get ill and die.
たとえ留学したくても家族全員は反対してしまえばそれまでだ。
Tatoe ryuugaku shi taku te mo kazoku zenin ha hantai shi te shimae ba sore made da.
Even if I want to study abroad, everyone in the family opposes my decision so it’s pointless.
偉大な理想を抱いても最初の困難が超えられなければそれまでだ。
Idai na risou o dai te mo saisho no konnan ga koerare nakere ba sore made da.
Even if you have great ambition, it will still be pointless if you can’t overcome the first obstacle.
いくらほしくても自分で得るまでがんばらないで他の人の成績を嫉妬せばそれまでだ。
Ikura hoshiku te mo jibun de eru made ganbara nai de ta no hito no seiseki o shitto se ba sore made da.
It’s pointless to be wanting many things but don’t try your best to get it, and always be jealous of the others’ achievements.
