Formation :
Meaning and how to use :
1. Are pronouns indicating direction, place, position of people, object or thing.
+) “こちら” describes the postition that is near the speaker but far the listener. (here)
+) “そちら” describes the postition that is far the speaker but near the listener (there)
+) “あちら” describes the postition that is far both the speaker and the listener
For example
こちらは居間です。
Kochira wa ima desu.
This place is living room.
そちらに電話があります。
sochira ni denwa ga ari masu.
There’s telephone there.
あちらに立っている人は中村さんです。
achira ni tatte iru hito wa nakamura san desu.
The man who is standing there is Nakamura.
2. “こちら” is also used to introduce a person that doesn’t belong to the speaker’s family.
こちらはIMC会社の会社員のナムさんです。
kochira wa IMC[?] kaisha no kaisha in no namu san desu
This is Mr. Nam, staff of IMC company.
こちらは私の友人のマリアさんです。
kochira wa watashi no yūjin no maria san desu.
This is Mrs. Maria,my friend.
Note:
1. “こちら/そちら/あちら”in turn is polite speaking of “ここ/そこ/あそこ”
2. when the speaker and the listener stand in the same position, “こちら” will be used to indicate the place near by the 2 roles, “そちら” indicates an a bit farther position. “あちら” indicates an absolute farther position..
