Meaning and how to use :
1.Describe some feelings toward a natural things, essence, truth. I some cases, it’s used as precept.
For example
人間はいろいろな災難に会うものだ。
Ningen ha iroiro na sainan ni au mono da.
In life, we naturally meet various misfortunes.
生命は短いものだ。生きているうちに、やりたいことをやらなきゃならない。
seimei ha mijikai mono da. Iki te iru uchi ni, yari tai koto o yara nakya nara nai.
Our life is short. We should do what we want while being alive.
会社員は上司を尊重するものだ。
kaisha in ha joushi o sonchou suru mono da.
Staffs have to respect their boss.
2. Express emotion, exclamation.
For example
彼は貧乏でも、被害者にお金を出し合った。優しいものだ。
kare ha binbou demo, higai sha ni okane o dashiatta. Yasashii mono da.
Although he’s poor, he still gives money to help the victims. What a kind man!
母にそんなひどいな態度をして、本当に生意気なものだ。
haha ni sonna hidoi na taido o shi te, hontouni namaiki na mono da.
He express bad attitude toward his mother, he’s so insolent.
3. Describe suprised feeling about something. Without “よく” this structure will lose its nature Here is the usage
For example
そんなに難しいテストが、彼女はよく１００点を得たものだ。
sonnani muzukashii tesuto ga, kanojo ha yoku ichi zero zero ten o e ta mono da.
The test is so hard but she gets 100 points.
こんな大きい会社はよくつぶれたものだ。
konna ookii kaisha ha yoku tsubure ta mono da.
Such a big company getting bankrupt.
4.Describe someone’s mood really want something.
Only used with :Vたい＋ものだ。
For example
日本に旅行しに行きたいものだ。
nippon ni ryokou shi ni iki tai mono da.
I really want to travel to Japan.
戦争がないところに住みたいものだ。
sensou ga nai tokoro ni sumi tai mono da.
I really want to live in place which has no war
5. Describe an emotional, repetitive action or event. (not remain in present time)
Only used with the conjugation: Vた＋ものだ。
For example
幼いころ、僕は田中さんと川で魚を釣ったものだ。
osanai koro, boku ha tanaka san to kawa de sakana o tsutta mono da.
When I was a child, I used to go fishing with Tanaka at river.
若いころ、私はいろいろな国に行ったものだ。今は健康がないので、どこでも行けない。
wakai koro, watashi ha iroiro na kuni ni itta mono da. Ima ha kenkou ga nai node, doko demo ike nai.
When I was young, I used to travel to many countries. Now my health isnt good enough, so I can’t do that.
