Meaning and how to use :
1. The event in following clause is opposite to one in the previous clause. Usually go with dissatisfaction with thing arising in the following clause.
For example
長いレポートをコンピュータで書いたものを、突然コンピュータが壊れてしまったん。
Nagai repōto o konpyūta de kai ta mono o, totsuzen konpyūta ga koware te shimatta n.
I have written a long report in computer, but the computer suddenly went wrong.
社長と相談したものを、最後会社に辞めさせました。
shachou to soudan shi ta mono o, saigo kaisha ni yamesase mashi ta.
I have discussed with the manager, but finally I was dismissed
彼に何度も電話を掛けたものを、情報が何も得られない。
kare ni nan do mo denwa o kake ta mono o, jouhou ga nani mo erare nai.
I have called him several times , but i got no information.
2. Describe an event that could have had a good result if we had done a thing, but we didn’t so we got a bad result. Usually go with blaming, regreting mood
Only used with the structure: …すればいいものを…
For example
この問題に対して田中さんの言った方法の通りに解決すればいいものを、最後私の通りに解決して、失敗した。
kono mondai nitaishite tanaka san no itta houhou no toori ni kaiketsu sure ba ii mono o, saigo watashi no toori ni kaiketsu shi te, shippai shi ta.
If we had done this thing like what Tanaka said, it could have been good. Finally, we still followed my direction, so we failed
ちゃんと練習すればいいものを、何もしないので、負けてしまった。
chanto renshuu sure ba ii mono o, nani mo shi nai node, make te shimatta.
How good it could have been, if I had practiced hard. But I didnt, so I lost.
一所懸命仕事をすればいいものを、怠けたので、上司に叱れました。
Isshokenmei shigoto o sure ba ii mono o, namake ta node, joushi ni shikare mashi ta.
It could have been good if I had tried my bad, but I didn’t, so I was scolded.
