Describe the meaning “accidentally/ unexpectedly/ suddenly”. It is used when doing something accidentally, without any reason or purpose.
Example:
親しい声が聞こえて、ふと立ち止まった。
Shitashii koe ga kikoete, futo tachi domatta.
I heard a familiar voice so I stopped suddenly.
ふとおかしい意見を思い出した。
Futo okashi iken wo omoidashita.
I suddenly came up with a funny idea.
ふとあの日のことが頭に浮かんだ。
Futo ano hi no koto ga atama ni ukanda.
That day suddenly came to my mind.
ふと彼女の話を思い出した。
Futo kanojo no hanashi wo omoidashita.
I suddenly remembered her story.
留学するときふと親の声が聞こえることもある。
Ryuugakusuru toki futo oya no koe ga kikoeru koto mo aru.
When I was studying abroad, sometimes I suddenly heard my parents’ voice.
Note: It goes with the words that describe psychological fluctuations such as「考える/思う/思い出す/むなしくなる/さびしくなる」to express that you suddenly remembered something but you don’t know why.
