Meaning and how to use :
Usage 1:
Expressing meaning ‘long ago / before”. This is a way of saying more formal than structure with the same meaning「前」 .
Examples:
以前日本に行ったことがあります。
Izen Nihon ni itta koto ga arimasu.
I have been to Japan before.
以前、アメリカ大統領に目にかかったことがあります。
Izen, Amerika daitouryou ni me ni kakatta koto ga arimasu.
I’ve met the US president before.
Usage 2
Combination: N以前
Expressing the meaning ‘before N”.
Examples:
十日以前レポートを提出してください。
tooka izen repōto o teishutsu shite kudasai.
Please submit the report before the 10th.
あさって以前彼女と連絡してください。
Asatte izen kanojo to renraku shite kudasai.
Please contact her before the day after tomorrow.
Usage 3:
Combination:Vるいぜん
Expressing the meaning “before V ..”. Used in the case expressing a time of an incident that begins a new period after a long period of the previous period.
Examples:
あの人は有名な画家になる前に、パリに住んでいました。
Ano hito wa yuumeina gaka ni naru mae ni, Pari ni sunde imashita.
That person lived in Paris before becoming a famous painter.
留学する前に、この高校に通学していました。
Ryuugaku suru mae ni, kono koukou ni tsuugaku shite imashita.
Before studying abroad, I attended this high school.
