Meaning and how to use :

Expressing the meaning of “the incident has reached its peak”.

Examples:

寒くてたまらないので体が震え上がった。
Samukute tamaranainode karada ga furueagatta.
My body was trembling because it was unbearably cold.

旱魃が続けるので池が干上がってしまった。
Kanbatsu ga tsudzukeru node ike ga hiagatte shimatta.
Because the drought/ reed continued, the pond has dried up.

晴れ上がった秋空が綺麗ですね。
Hareagatta akizora ga kireidesu ne.
It was such beautifully clear autumn sky!

寒さに体が縮み上がった。
Samusa ni karada ga chidjimiagatta.
It was so cold that my body shrank. /Because of the cold, my body shrank.

川がひあがって生活はとても困難です。
Kawa ga hiagatte seikatsu wa totemo konnan desu.
Because the river has dried up, people’s lives are very hard.
