16.手を貸す- To give a hand

For example:

この本だなを動かしたいんだが、ちょっと手を貸してくれないか。

Kono hondana wo ugakashitaindaga, chotto te wo kashitekurenaika

→ Could you please give me a hand placing this bookshelf?

17.手を借りる – To receive help from somebody

For example:

ひっこしをするのに兄の手を借りて荷物をはこばなくてはならなかった。

Hikkoshi wo surunoni ani no te wo karite nimotsu wo hakobanakute ha naranakatta

→ I had my brother help me when moving out.

18.手を切る – To end a friendship/relationship

For example:

金を貸しても返さないような人とは手を切りたい。

Kane wo kashitemo kaeshinai younahito toha te wo kiritai

→ I don’t want to have anything to do with people who never pay their debts.

19.手をつける – To start

For example:

しなくてはならないことが多いすぎで、何から手をつけたらいいかわからない。

Shinakute ha naranaikoto ga ooisugite, nanikara te wo tsuketaraiika wakaranai.

→ There are so many things to do but I don’t know where to start.

20.手をのばす – To attempt new things, start a new job.

For example:

放送にも手をのばしている新聞社が多い。

Housou nimo te wo nobashiteiru shinbunsha ga ooi.

→ There are many printing presses start to launch live broadcasts.

21.手が広げる – To expand, to attempt new things

For example:

鉄道会社がバスにてを広げて失敗した。

Tetsudoukaisha ga basu ni tewo hirogete shippaishita.

→ The railway company has failed in their attempt to start a bus business.

22.手を休める – To take a break in working hours

For example:

仕事はまたたくさんあるけど、ちょっと手を休めてコーヒーでも飲みましょう。

Shigoto ha mata takusan arukedo, chotto te wo yasumete koohii demo nomimashou.

→ Even though there still is a lot of work, but let’s take a break and have a cup of coffee.
