11.手につかない – Unable to concentrate, feeling uneasy

For example:

父の病気が心配で勉強が手につかない。

Chichino byoukiga shinpaide benkyou ga tenitsukanai.

→ I’m very worried about my dad’s condition so I can’t concentrate on studying.

12.手に取るように – To know something really well

For example:

友だちの手紙を読んで、元気で働いているようすが手に取るようにわかった。

Tomodachi no tegami wo yonde, genki de hataraiteiru yousu ga tenitoruyouni wakatta.

→ Reading your letter, I know that you’re doing really well.

13. 手に入る – To have (got) something

For example:

うまい酒が手に入ったから今晩、飲みに来ないか。

ありがとう。行く、行く!

Umaisake ga tenihaitta kara konban, nomini konaika.

Arigatou. Iku,iku!

→ I have really good wine in my house, come over tonight!

Thanks, I will.

14. 手も足も出ない – Unable to do anything because the opponent is too strong

For example:

相手が強すぎて手も足も出なかった。

Aite ga tsuyosugite temoashiodenakatta.

→ Can’t help it, the opponent is too strong.

15.手を打つ – To plan ahead, prepare for the future

For example:

年をとったときにこまらないように貯金や保険などの手を打っておく。

Toshi wo tottatoki ni komaranaiyouni chokin ya hoken nado no te wo utteoku.

→ I have bought insurance and saved money… just in case.
