3. Grammar
V1 ます remove ます ＋ながら V2
Meaning : do both V1 and v2 at the same time, V1 while V2
Usage : Describe 2 actions that take place simultaneously or in parallel at the same time.
Example:
ご飯を食べながら、テレビを見ます
Gohan wo tabenagara, terebi wo mimasu.
I watch TV while eating.
はたらきながら、日本語勉強しています。
hataraki nagara, nihongo benkyoushite imasu.
I am studying Japanese while I am working.
Vています
Meaning : often~
Usage : Express a regular habit
If it is a habit or behavior in the past, we use 「ていました」
Example :
毎日日本語を勉強しています。
Mainichi nihongo wo benkyoushite imasu.
I study Japanese everyday.
Plain form + し、~~
Usage :
Connect clauses or sentences that sharing one subject
List reasons or a representative reason.
Example :
駅から近いし、車でも来られるし、この店はとても便利です。
Eki kara chikaishi, kuruma demo korareshi, kono mise ha totemo benridesu.
This store is near the station and even the car can go in, so it is very convenient.
それに
Meaning : in addition, moreover
Example :
桜大学は いい先生が いるし、父が 出た大学 だし、それに 家から 近いですから。
Sakura daigaku ha ii sensei ga irushi, chichi ga deta daigaku dashi, soreni ie kara chikai desu kara.
Sakura university has good teachers and my father used to study there. Moreover, it’s near my house.
それで
Meaning : therefore, so ~
Usage : Use to connect 2 sentences, the following sentence is the result of the reason that was presented in the previous sentence.
Example :
このレストランは値段も安いし、おいしいんです。それで人が多いんですね。
Kono resutoran wa nedan mo yasui shi, oishiin desu. sorede hito ga ooin desune.
This restaurant has cheap and delicious food, so there are many people (coming there).
N (place) に 行きます/来ます/帰ります/しゅっちょうします
Usage : [に] can replace [へ] to show the direction of actions
Example :
市場に行きます。
Ichiba ni ikimasu.
I go to the market.
4. Kaiwa
お茶でも 飲みながら。。。
ocha demo nomi nagara…
小川幸子 : ミラーさん、ちょっと お願いが あるんですが。
Kogawa Yoshiko: mira san, chotto onegai ga arun desu ga.
ミラー : 何ですか。
nani desu ka.
小川幸子 : 息子に 英語を 教えて いただけませんか。
Kogawa Yoshiko: musuko ni eigo o oshie te itadake masen ka.
夏休みに オーストラリアへ ホームステイに 行くんですが、会話が できないんですよ
natsuyasumi ni o-sutoraria he ho-musutei ni ikun desu ga, kaiwa ga deki nain desu yo
ミラー : 教えて あげたいんですけど、ちょっと 時間が･･････。
mira oshie te age tain desu kedo, chotto jikan ga…….
小川幸子 : お茶でも 飲みながら おしゃべりして いただけませんか。
Kogawa Yoshiko: ocha demo nomi nagara oshaberi shi te itadake masen ka.
ミラー : うーん、出張も 多いし、もうすぐ 日本語の 試験も あるし･････。
Mira: un, shucchou mo ooi shi, mousugu nihongo no shiken mo aru shi……
ミラー : それに、今まで 教えた ことが ありませんから･････。
Mira: soreni, ima made oshie ta koto ga ari masen kara……
小川幸子 : だめですか。じゃ、残念ですが･････。
Kogawa Yoshiko: dame desu ka. ja, zannen desu ga……
ミラー : どうも すみません。
Mira: doumo sumimasen.
Translation:
While drinking some tea….
Kogawa Yoshiko: Mr. Miller, I have something to ask.
Miller: What is it?
Kogawa Yoshiko: Can you please teach my son English?
He will do a homestay in Australia, but he can’t speak English.
Miller: I really want to teach him, but the time is….
Kogawa Yoshiko: Can you please chat with me while drinking some tea?
Miller: Well, there are a lot of business trips, and there will be Japanese exam soon…
Moreover, I have never taught English before…..
Kogawa Yoshiko: Is it really impossible? Well, unfortunately….
